ABOUT
Gabrielle H. Weiss is a painter currently living and working in Queens, NY . She received her BFA from Alfred University’s School of Art and Design in May of 2018. In June of 2019 she was an artist in residence at the 77Arts Residency in Rutland, VT.
My work investigates the perception of death through comparing the sentimental to the scientific way we approach preservation and mourning. The practices that lie outside the norm of society's traditions call attention to the vast differences in our beliefs about death from one person to the next. While each piece remains focused on the figure, my approach to creating each piece varies. My emotional response to each researched subject matter influences my material and stylistic approach to the imagery. Ranging from intense color and gesture to the pared-down use of line as form, I explore the beauty, humor, and philosophical way I process the weight of mortality.
